UC San Diego Sports Medicine Advantage
As part of a prestigious university and medical school, our specialty trained orthopedic surgeons and nonsurgical sports medicine specialists are on the leading edge of innovation, with access to the latest technological advances, diagnosis and treatment strategies.
The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at UC San Diego Health System is the only practice in San Diego with all orthopedic subspecialties represented to treat your muscles, bones and joints from head to toe. Our partners in Family and Sports Medicine have trained doctors from around the country since 1991 in our nationally recognized sports medicine fellowship program. Together we bring you multiple experts and multiple services at multiple sites.
Our physicians are faculty at UC San Diego School of Medicine and must stay ahead of the game to train future physicians in the latest advances in patient assessment and treatment. As faculty, they work with young and exceptionally bright residents who continually challenge them to know the right answers and ask the right questions. Many faculty members are leaders in academic societies, exposing them to national and international leaders, thoughts, techniques and advances.
Our physicians have access to the latest in imaging and technology including the latest in high definition low dose CT scanners with a 64 slice GE HD scanner at each location. UC San Diego Health System has multiple high resolution ultrasound machines at each site and the latest in both 1.5 and 3 Tesla MRI. These technologies offer a combination of high image quality to allow for a more accurate diagnosis and effective treatment approaches, as well as the potential for dose reduction for each patient.
UC San Diego Health System’s Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is unique in the U.S. in that it has its own basic science faculty. These scientists study clinical problems such as back pain, muscle injury, arthritis, disc degeneration and the effects of transfer, exercise, cerebral palsy, obesity and musculoskeletal conditions using a variety of state-of-the-art tools. The laboratory, located in a new building adjacent to the UC San Diego campus, is a self-contained scientific enterprise with tools ranging from gene-cloning to micro computed tomography. Nearly every scientist on our faculty has won the highest awards in research from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery.
